Oh, Pembantu Rumah!!

I have a lingering thought that I wanna share with u guys. Average salary for maids is around RM400-450. Just recently, an article in The Star dated 9th June 2009,

BE PREPARED to dig deeper into your pockets for an Indonesian maid.Sin Chew Daily quoted Indonesia’s Ambassador to Malaysia Dai Bachtiar as saying that the minimum pay would be set at RM600 a month with the move to be implemented in September.

Dai Bachtiar had, in an exclusive interview, said this was still lower than what Indonesian maids in other countries were paid.

Indonesian maids in Saudi Arabia draw a monthly salary of RM900, while their counterparts in Hong Kong earn RM1,300 a month and get a day off each week.

Currently there are 10,000 Indonesian maids in Hong Kong, and some 30,000 in Malaysia.

Let's face it, maids are a necessity nowadays. Especially, if u have little kids and both of u are working. BUT, if there is a minimum wage set and the amount is quite high, it is gonna be a burden towards a majority of malaysian middle class workers.

Just a simple comparison will shows that the figure is ridiculous because full time maids normally will get free lodging and food. In fact, I personally haven't heard of any cases that will suggest otherwise. For example, a Malaysian worker at a supermarket, the average income would be around RM700-800 and u need to at least have PMR or SPM and speak a bit of English. Only, there is no such things as free lodging and food.

Do u know how much is the cost to rent a room and getting a proper meals per month?

Why do we need to pay our maids higher salary than our own Malaysian people that have basic education?

If they compare what they are getting with their counterparts in Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong, why don't they compare the salary and spending power of their employer as well?

When the ambassador make such statement and demand, u cannot simply pick and choose what u want to compare. That is irresponsible. In conclusion, a demand without a basic is just like asking a ransom without a hostage (sorry guys, too much watching movie).

Did u noticed, when things like this 'pop out' and become a hot topic suddenly in the media and papers there will be always sensational news about maids getting battered, locked in a room or did not get a proper meals? BUT, how about the story about maids that are properly treated, that joins us on our vacation or the best part, that we treated like our own family.

Mr. Apeng..

p/s Alhamdulillah, presently we still managed to live our life without a maid. My husband is the only one out working whille I'm bless that I have the option of working from home and in the same time fulfil my duties as a housewife.

The question is, what about people that don't have a choice?

Love

Maids as necessities? Malaysian at its' best, I'd say. What was even mind boggling is that we expect this so-called 'necessities' to come at a below market price. Lepas ni maid pun nak kena subsidi agaknya.

Let's face this hard fact; we're not an affluent nation as we think we are. Well, not as affluent as the Saudis, at least. We simply cannot afford to pay for these maids lest the minimum wage is imposed. Obviously, many are not happy at this cheap luxury taken away from them. And that's why we get to hear this argument from you; about not to compare an apple (i.e. Malaysia) to sebiji buah tamar (i.e. Arab Saudi).

That is indeed a good argument, but only if you are talking about fuel simply because fuel is a commodity, and every country needs the commodity to well-oil their economy. And that's the reason we pushed for the gomen to lower the prices of oil. Many simply cannot function without cheap oil.

But are maids a commodity? The answer is, as you would have guessed, NO. Kalau setiap rumah takde maid, kau rasa ekonomi negara kacau bilau tak? If career is a concern, then just drop off those kids dekat rumah pengasuh everyday before work, and there are no such thing as sibuk sampai tak sempat nak sapu lantai seminggu 2 kali.

So I ask u, where is the need to make these maids available for low wages? The answer is slothfulness. Manja. Semua nak disedia, lepas tu bila tak mampu, mula la nak argue yg bukan-bukan.

And look at it this way; if you pay low, then the quality of the product that you get is also low . Last2, dapat maid yg tak reti mop lantai sebab yang terer2 semua dah kene hantar pegi Saudi.

You yourself ma'am, say if you were offered to work in Dubai for RM30k per month and your current job gives you only a measly RM15k here in Malaysia, whould you stay or leave for the better? Aci potong jari, you'll leave in the next available flight punyalah!

Same with the Indonesians. If they knew that they are getting better pay elsewhere, why come here anyway? I know there are many more factors that comes into consideration e.g. the similarity of language and the close proximity of the countries (boleh selalu balik kampung), and these factors can work to our favour too. Minimum pay of RM600, combined with the many, many advantages of working in Malaysia is a delicious carrot dangling from the stick.

Lagipun, RM600 tu is not that expensive la. Laki-bini keluar sorang RM300 je. Think about it; at least you don't need to send the kids to nurseries. Jimat duit dekat situ, guna untuk bayar maid pulak. Bilik yg maid tu duduk, kalau maid tu takde sekalipun, tetap jugak ko kene bayar full payment utk rumah tu. Ok what?

Why do we need to pay our maids higher salary than our own Malaysian people that have basic education?

Easy. Because those Malaysians with basic education simply refuses to basuh spender laki orang, bagi suap makan anak orang, basuh pinggan dekat rumah orang, dan polish kereta orang hari-hari without even one day off per week. Cuma foreign maids je yg sanggup buat keje macam tu, and of course it comes with a price. Orang kita yg ada basic edu lagi sanggup keje bergaji sikit di Jayen dari jadi maid sebab at least lepas work hours boleeh jugak keluar karaoke dgn kawan-kawan. Ada faham?

And what's the fuss here? If you are so concerned about M'sian getting little pay, you can always push the gov to set minimum wage for workers in private sector what?

If they compare what they are getting with their counterparts in Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong, why don't they compare the salary and spending power of their employer as well?

Then look at the mirror. If we don't have the same spending power, then why spend for this luxury at all?

Panjang gila komen. I doubt anyone would ever read this. Haha.

Miss,
Hopefully, we can agree to disagree.

You yourself ma'am, say if you were offered to work in Dubai for RM30k per month and your current job gives you only a measly RM15k here in Malaysia, whould you stay or leave for the better? Aci potong jari, you'll leave in the next available flight punyalah!

Since I wrote this piece, i feel that i should answer ur question. Although money is important but its not the only deciding factor as u mentioned as well. See, there is s'thing that we agree. BUT, I should stress out that not everybody is materialistic. To me, working conditions is more important. Have u ask or talk to a maid that have an experience working in the middle east? Is it worth the extra rm300?

Lagipun, RM600 tu is not that expensive la. Laki-bini keluar sorang RM300 je. Think about it; at least you don't need to send the kids to nurseries. Jimat duit dekat situ, guna untuk bayar maid pulak. Bilik yg maid tu duduk, kalau maid tu takde sekalipun, tetap jugak ko kene bayar full payment utk rumah tu. Ok what?

I hope this is not directed towards us? Self explanatory on the p/s paragraph.

The question is, what about people that don't have a choice?
Can u answer this question.

camni la, kesimpulan mudah je, maid arini sangat LEMAK..keja malaysia sekadar batu loncatan, takde hati langsung nak keja as maid.Berape ramai maid lari sana sini asyik kena rotate ngan agent>> ramai giler k.
yang stay pulak, mostly majikan terpaksa sabar, pasal memang no choice, sume no quality.Nak rm600?? Giler ape..

Orang kita taknak keja maid because peluang better kat luar, kilang n all++ freedom n glam...indonesian maid lain, negara dia, keja pun takde, datang sini main-main pastu nak rm600.. rm400-rm450 tu sangat lumayan kat negara dia. kategori tak syukur la ni.

pastu miss tu cakap kalau gaji dia bayar rm30k trus naik next flight, kelakarnye bukan sume orang camtu..nak korban tempat asal jadi balachi orang lain di negara orang lain , satu pengorbanan yang besar..takleh compare langsung ngan duit.Duit bukan segalanye.

korang takde maid, tak pernah jumpa maid hampeh, agent hampeh, senang lah cakap demikian. Orang yang pernah melalui confirm setuju rm600langsung tak berbaloi yang ape servis yang korang dapat..

Miss Geraldine:

may i ask u, do u urself have a maid? Yes, the news potray such situation where we the majikan macam singa dera them...but how about other thousands more cases of them lari? bringing in boyfriend when employee is not around? stealing things? these are the things that we been dealing with but does not appear in the news.

"You yourself ma'am, say if you were offered to work in Dubai for RM30k per month and your current job gives you only a measly RM15k here in Malaysia, whould you stay or leave for the better? Aci potong jari, you'll leave in the next available flight punyalah!"

Alrite...sila potong jari sekarang. or in this case sila potong 2 jari. Coz Mr Apeng and my husband are two example who doesnt leave for job in Dubai for double the pay. Airline in middle east pay double but yet both of our husband are still working here.
Just like Mr Apeng said...work condition is his priority.

Ha...potong lah jari tu yer.

Then again, if keja kat Malaysia...anytime they can cabut. Naik kapal tongkak balik. But if those in middle east..they hafta save up for their airine ticket aight.

Yes, they get paid more..and ended up spending more too.
